Opinions about the marathon yearlings competition are divided in Romania. However, every year many yearlings are engaged in this type of races, not only participating, but also winning them. This is also the case of the 2021 season, a competitive year in which 3107 National Marathon norms were achieved. Of course, the participation involved a much higher number than the norms achieved, but the number of the latter is very satisfactory, considerably higher than in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

As in the case of old birds, the first national place and the champion trophy goes to a pigeon fancier from the province of Moldova. Vasile Cordeanu, from Vaslui, is therefore the champion of the category of the 2021 season, a pigeon fancier with many good results obtained exclusively at the Marathon category. The second place was also won by a pigeon fancier from this region, but this time from Neamț, in the person of Mircea Bejenaru. They are followed by the Buian team Damian V&M, which brings to their association the second consecutive trophy won in this category.

Vasile Cordeanu (Vaslui), a new national trophy won for Marathon

Pigeon fancier from Vaslui, Vasile Cordeanu, is the type of fancier focused only on the competitive side of this sport. For him, it is not important the origins, the big names or other details like these, but it is important that his pigeons compete at the highest level. He also looks at the same area when he purchases new pigeons for his loft. It is not the name of the fancier or the pigeon origins that matters, but more important is that the pigeons purchased come directly from the champions. In this way, Vasile Cordeanu managed to climb quickly in the national charts and, in the 12 years of activity, he has already collected several national trophies. The last of these was won last year, when the young hen RO-20-0558729 won the 1st place in the Marathon yearlings, with 3.97 penalty points. The result was achieved with two stages in Vilnius (946, 976 km), competitions in which Vasile Cordeanu’s hen won the 1st place in the county against 789 pigeons, and the 1st place in the county, but this time against 6,294 pigeons. Mircea Bejenaru (Neamt), again in the national top for Marathon category

Since 2013, Mircea Bejenaru, from Piatra-Neamț, competes only in the Marathon races, category where he has obtained numerous national trophies. Every year, he was at least in the national top 10, climbing the podium several times, as was the case after the 2021 season. But this time, the joy was even greater as the result was obtained by a young hen from a newly introduced family in his loft. These are the Jos Martens pigeons recently purchased by Mircea Bejenaru and which have already “produced” the first national trophy. The young runner-up has the series RO-20-0521541 and obtained a coefficient of 4.39 penalty points, after ranking 5th out of 4,223 pigeons (883 km) and 22nd out of 10,591 pigeons (915 km). Both rankings were obtained at the Vilnius competition and, each time, the hen arrived in the loft on the first day of the competition. “I have been competing for a long time, but since 2013 only in the marathon, and meanwhile I have won several national trophies. In recent years, I have been closely following Jos Martens’ pigeons and have brought to the loft products from his best fliers. Last year I competed with them and I was not a little surprised when I saw that they performed very well at the first stage of the marathon. That’s when I decided to engage them for a second marathon competition, with this hen standing out. I want to tell you that the season was a very difficult one, with races of difficult conditions, heat and front wind. The Damian V&M (Buzau) team, on the national podium since its debut

For the team Damian V&M from Buzau, 2021 was the debut season. But not every debut, because the team also won the first national trophy. As the flight group consisted exclusively of young pigeons, the prize came to one of the yearlings categories, namely the National Marathon. The trophy was won by the cock RO-20-0720165, who, after two stages, Terespol and Bielsk, obtained a penalty of 4.50 points. Very interesting is that both scores were centralized in the general rankings. Thus, at the Terespol stage, where the cock had to cover 839 km, he took the 9th place out of 6,739, and at the Bielsk stage, the 846 km competition, he obtained the 22nd place out of 6,966 pigeons.
