From the range of the special prizes granted by the National Federation of Pigeon Fanciers in Romania to the Romanian fanciers, the “Traian Nițescu” trophy is also included, set up to commemorate the overwhelming role of Major Traian Nițescu for the development of the Romanian Columbophilia. At the dawn of his existence, the first pigeon organization in Romania was „Columba Association – Romanian Union for the Breeding of Traveling Pigeons, founded in 1937 by Major Traian Nițescu. A great pigeon lover, Major Traian Nițescu was a decisive and providential figure for the development of racing pigeons sport in Romania. In addition to setting the foundation for the first official pigeon fancier association, recognized by the Council of Ministers, Major Traian Nițescu played a special role in the context of the terrible drought of 1946-1947. The lack of cereals endangered the life of the pigeons themselves, but, through repeated interventions, Traian Nițescu managed to procure a considerable amount of cereals and saved many valuable pigeons. Unfortunately, after the Communists came to Romania, Major Traian Nițescu was executed in Gherla Prison and buried in a common grave. But at least among pigeons fanciers, his memory is always alive. Many pigeon clubs in Romania are named after him, and lately, through the actions of the National Federation of Pigeon Fanciers in Romania, the pigeon with the most ranked kilometers in a season is rewarded with the “Traian Nițescu” trophy. Thus, the merits of Major Nițescu are recognized among the fanciers, and to the pigeon who succeeds in such a performance in a season, its undeniable value is certified.
